As part of our research we spoke to our own vets and groomers as well as some rescues and trainers for their input and advice.

 

What we learned was that if you want to address behavioral issues in your companion dogs any of these professionals will help!!!! In fact, they want to see you and your dog succeed in addressing issues so all of you can stay together!!!! 

 

Our vets told us that they have requests for training referrals regularly for everyday behavioral issues like potty training, jumping on people, and chewing on things.  They all told us they can offer referrals for families looking to address these issues.  And the issues should be addressed before they become bigger issues!!!! We interviewed Redemption Rescues, Inc. (we love them because they specifically help our pitbull friends) and nearly all of the dogs they rescue need training.  However, just as we discovered when we toured the Posh Pets Long Beach Shelter, after committed consistent training the dogs are adopted!!!! 

 

We also spoke to Juli Lathrop from The Kramer Foundation.  Juli has saved and rehabilitated nearly 1000 dogs.  The Kramer Foundation takes the dogs that everyone has given up on, the ones shelters say are untrainable, the ones that everyone else has said must be euthanized.  You know what???  She trains them to understand boundaries, she addresses the dogs instincts (i.e.: working breeds, etc.), she gains their trust and respect and she undoes damage from prior bad training.  GUESS WHAT THE RESULT HAS BEEN???? Not surprising, just as we had found before, the dogs get the second chance they deserve, they learn to be well behaved and they find homes, or in the case of Nash, they find the job of their dreams!!!!! ALL IT TAKES IS COMMITTED CONSISTENCY!!!!

 

We also learned that you MUST interview any trainer that is referred to you and speak to other families that have used that trainer.  Ask what techniques he/she uses since not all approaches work for every dog.  You should attend a class run by that trainer and get a feel for how the dogs react to them.  One of the families we spoke to used two trainers and a behaviorist before they found the right trainer for their dog.  That trainer was the right one and has made all the difference.  Speak to other people with the same type of dog to see what has worked for them.  WANT REAL LIFE EXAMPLE OF HOW THIS WORKS???? Ben’s family had a trainer and a behaviorist tell them there was nothing that could be done for Ben-CRAZY RIGHT????!!!! Ben’s family was so committed to him they reached out on social media and through another family with a yorkie (with similarly strong terrier instincts) they found Tai Nero of Allstars Working Dogs.  YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENED RIGHT? WHAT IS THE CRUX OUF OUR MESSAGE (IF YOU HAVEN’T FIGURED IT OUT YET)????? YOU KNOW THE SAYING, WHERE THERE IS A WILL THERE IS WAY RIGHT??? WELL FAMILIES THAT ARE COMMITTED TO CONSISTENT TRAINING CAN ADDRESS, MANAGE AND SOLVE THE BEHAVIORAL ISSUES OF THEIR COMPANION DOGS.
